| Road trip! (and a bit of an intro) |
[08 May 2008|02:07pm] |
Hullo. I'm Liz. I'm a high school student in Holland, Michigan (where I also reside). It's a little town, in conservative West Michigan. Right now we have our annual festival where people come from all around the world and clog up downtown with traffic. This, and my hopeful summer plans have inspired a post on road trips and sights to see! My contribution, is "Tulip Time"... I'm in the process of buying a car, and with that car I will hopefully go on a week long road trip with my friend this summer. My question to you is...do you have any favorite festival-type-things like Tulip Time...but cooler? What about road trips, where are some of the favorite "off the beaten path" places you've gone? Or even places on the beaten path if they're truly special. What about places you really want to go to? Any recommendations in the US? Pictures are always welcome! Also! What are you're favorite things to bring on road trips, the essentials? What about driving music? (Mine is a mix of mainstream hip hop, classic rock, oldschool country (Johnny Cash!), and epic songs. Anything to inspire, and keep awake!). Hopefully this wasn't too long of a post!

| Printmaking |
[12 May 2008|05:59pm] |

I was looking through a folder of random pictures today, when I stumbled upon this. It's a print I made when I was in art school, and it struck me how I miss doing graphic works. This one was made on copper plate, using engraving, drypoint, aquatint & photoetching.
It's a part of a triptych, that worked around the mare. The mara, or the mare, is "a kind of malignant female wraith in Scandinavian folklore believed to cause nightmares" (borrowed text from Wikipedia.), and I based this certain piece on how what people used to blame a supernatural creature for in the past, has now become something we blame our selves, our own minds & insecurities & fears for. How we, in that way, have become our own mares. Thus, that piece is a selfportrait. .... Anyway, that's not what this post was supposed to be about.
I bet there's a lot of fans (and artists) of printmaking in here, and I was wondering if I could see some of your favorite works, either made by yourself or by some other artists.
Here's a few of my favorite prints... these will not be my own, though.

I recently watched David Lynch's Mulholland Dr., and it was one of the best films I've seen in a long time. I wasn't familiar with any of Lynch's work prior to this, but plan on watching more of his movies soon.
Which got me to thinking, who are some of your favourite film directors, and why? There have been so many posts in blackcigarette about recommending movies, but very few that discuss directors.
Here are two of mine:
